Acido Records - DJ Dynamo Dreesen [part II]
Part II - The DJ
In Part I, we had a quick dip into Acido Records' sound. In this post, we'll have a full immersion into the very heart of Dynamo Dresen's influences, 'deep into the bowel of house' (cf. the tracklist below).
What may not be so obvious when listening to the last releases of Acido records, is the strong fascination of its boss Dynamo Dresen for House Music, the one that sounds rough and dirty and uncompromised, the 'analog driven house captured on pure vinyl'. Those very relevant last words are taken from the very nice Made Like A Tree website, which published a podcast by Dynamo Dresen last november 2010, accompanied by an insightful introduction about our man and his musical background. That set, entitled 'Second Visit From Italy', was actually one part of two mixes Dynamo Dresen recorded back in spring 2010, the other one, previously unreleased, being shared with you today on HHR.
'Back and Forward' is the title of this mix. Most of its tracks are from the mid-90's and clearly affiliated with the Chicago scene. Some more recent productions appear along the way, but also have their roots deeply connected to the original womb.
What I think makes this mix captivating, after a few listens now, is the richness and variety in terms of moods and colours. One could expect quite a narrow musical spectrum considering the attachment to a particular scene and sound, but the humble and passionate treatment given here prooves that house music can be so much more than just making people dance and sweat and have a fun time. The aesthetic connections to living in an urban society might prevail to some extent, and I guess listening to this mix works best when strolling through a great ensemble of towers and factories than in a quaint countryside, but nevertheless, this sound vibrates with tons of - paradoxical - emotions and movements (back and forth, up and down, fast and slow, abstract and concrete...) that anybody, anywhere could relate to, if not for some - very understandable hence forgiveable - contextual and/or cultural prejudices (DJ Sprinkles/Terre Thaemlitz featured in the mix provides clever reflections on the subject...here among other).
Clearly, the 'young generation' and faint digital lovers might have a hard time here, but for those who love being shaken up and taken aback, 'Back and Forward' will definitely bring longlasting satisfaction.
Enough said about the music, so before listening, here are some not-so-musical elements compiled through a little HouseHusband quizz that Andreas (living in Italy) kindly accepted to reply to, in order to reconnect with some primary domestic concerns and get to know him and his househusband skills a bit better.
HHR : Do you like cooking ?
AK : I do like cooking so much that you could easily call me Capitano Cook... haha... It's realy important for me to eat what i cook, or my girlfriend !
HHR : What is your favorite recipe ?
AK : I like so many things that I can't tell, like a lot of Pasta with lots of fresh veggies, fish, meat... all kinds of PASTA version, with red wine !
HHR : Do you take part in domestic tasks ?
AK : Yes, I do clean dishes or rooms, I wasn't always good in that, but I've been an almost full grown adult for a few years :) I used to be a professional dishwasher when living in the USA, made my living with that for a few months in restaurants until I became a busboy/waiter !
HHR : What's your favorite ?
AK : Dishwashing. It really gets me started on other activities !
HHR : What's your most feared ?
AK : cleaning toilets !
HHR : Do you have a favorite soundtrack to do your housekeeping chores ?
AK : Any good techno !
HHR : Do you have any practical tips to make domestic life easier ?
AK : Keep as less glasses and plates as possible !
Yes, we are dealing with a very proud representant of the househusband community... ;-)
So now Andreas leaves the dishes to dry and gets ready for another kind of plates full of nicely cooked groove.
